An effective treatment for your stress and anxiety issues at South West Hypnotherapy in Clevedon.

Many people, of all ages and walks of life, struggle with stress and anxiety problems to an excessive degree. Others are hindered by phobias. Unfortunately, the only treatment most of these people are likely to receive is medication and this merely masks the symptoms.

Some therapies try to address the emotion problems and symptoms over several years by talking you through your worries. Others promise an instant remedy or just a way of coping with your problem without getting to the root cause. These strategies may provide short term relief but not a long term benefit. Basically, most therapies don't get to the root cause of the problem.

Man StressedThe treatment of stress and anxiety problems and phobias can be dealt with in a direct manner that goes to the original cause of the symptom. In this way the issue can be completely resolved. This is achieved through hypnosis and accesses emotions associated with an event or events, usually from childhood. To accomplish this the client knows they are in a safe, calm, supportive and completely non-judgemental environment. We will talk through your emotions together.

Hypnotherapy and hypnoanalysis, provided in a compassionate manner in a safe environment, usually over a few sessions, positively changes people’s lives and is a liberating experience!

Phobias

How many of us have phobias? How many of us have morbid and irrational fears? The fears can be sudden and overwhelming and the fears are very real to the person experiencing them. Anticipating these fears or phobias can actually hinder and harm our lives, preventing us from living life to the full.

To state things in psychological terms, a phobia is an 'external symbol of an internal anxiety'.

Phobias are symbols of our anxiety. The 'fear of heights' is a good example of how phobias are usually symbolic. I knew an person who could not even ascend a ladder a few feet to pick fruit from an apple tree so strong was the fear of heights. By ascending the ladder or leaving the ground this person felt a powerful sense of losing control. Regardless of the fact that the person was only a few feet above the ground they felt a panic about being out of control.

The human psyche 'symbolises', or represents and stands for something else, the fear of being out of control and projects this onto experiencing heights, or spiders or crowds or any number of other objects, conditions or situations.

Phobias develop as a direct result of many varied experiences, but not all people have phobias. Children, with their fully developed range of emotions but emerging intellect and rationality, may experience very unpleasant situations. The emotional reaction may be equally intense but without the compensatory intellect or rationality these emotions become blocked from consciousness or pent up and may develop a phobia or anxiety. This is a  form of psychic defence warning a person not to get into that, or any similar, situation where there may be a loss of control.

There is a way to be rid your phobia. The cause of the phobia was emotional and only a treatment that deals with the original emotion stands any long term chance of  ridding the person of the phobia. It’s not enough to focus on the fear because this is only addressing the symptom and not the cause. Therapies that talk you through the fear may offer short term relief but hypnotherapy will reach the emotional cause of the phobia. Hypnotherapy will allow you to safely confront the original emotion and in doing so, release and dissipate it.

There are perhaps a couple hundred known and named phobias. A tiny sample of some of the most well known includes:

Acrophobia -    a fear of heights
Aviatophobia  - a fear of flying
Agoraphobia -   a fear of open spaces
Arachnophobia - a fear of spiders
Claustrophobia - a fear of enclosed spaces
Demophobia - a fear of crowds
Odontophobia - a fear of dentists
Glossophobia - a fear of public speaking
Hydrophobia - a fear of water

Other very common phobias that I treat include:

  • Social Anxiety
The fear of being judged or singled out for attention.
Also known as Social Phobia, it is a surprisingly common phobia.

  • Emetophobia
The fear of being sick
Emetophobia often affects more women than mean and is a fear of choking or gagging or a fear of being sick.

  • Coprophobia
The fear of using the toilet particularly, with men, in front of others when using a public lavatory. Toilet problems such as coprophobia are surprisingly common.

  • Panic Attacks
People suffering from phobias often have panic attacks or intense anxiety attacks when confronted with their fear or phobia. A panic attack is a sudden onset of intense anxiety, usually lasting a few minutes. Several symptoms of a panic attack can include: sweating, highly accelerated heart rate, nausea, chest pain, and hot flushes. All these symptoms can be accompanied by intense fears and a feeling of a loss of control and builds in intensity for several minutes.

Help for Social Anxiety

Social Anxiety, also known as Social Phobia, is surprisingly common and generally affects more than 10% of the population of both genders. Both male and female sufferers have fears of  being singled out for individual attention, socially, at work, and in group situations. The may suffer with fears that their actions will result in embarrassment or even humiliation. There can also be a very intense aversion to any form of criticism or judgement. The symptoms are very diverse and include sweating, blushing, nervousness, stammering, etc. Social anxiety, and its symptoms,  is the most common condition a hypnotherapist treats.

Do you experience any of the following?
Signs of depression

Feelings of inferiority. Fear or rejection, eating in public, a fear of authority, stuttering or stammering. Are you very self conscious? Do you experience sexual inhibitions or performance anxiety, blushing, hot flashes, or a shy bladder? Do you fear being humiliated, or do you lack confidence? Are you afraid to speak either in meetings or interviews? There are many more symptoms, but all of the above are symptoms of social phobia.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (4th edition) - defines social anxiety as:

"A marked and persistent fear of one or more social or performance situations in which the person is exposed to unfamiliar people or to possible scrutiny by others. The individual fears that he/she will act in a way that will be humiliating or embarrassing..."
